Un-schooled self portrait • covid craft activity with kids

It is hard to recognize people behind their masks.. “Is it Eva’s mom shopping over there?”. Or maybe you’ve been waiting for your rendez-vous to arrive, only to realize your friend was already there… but masked!

I stumbled upon this masked self-portrait for kids returning to school on Pinterest and wanted to try it with my kids. I LOVE when they make self portraits or draw the family, but they’ve been pretty reluctant to the idea.

Surprisingly, they accepted to do this craft with me and I loved how it turned out. Gaspard decided NOT to draw himself (or maybe he changed his mind while drawing) and Garance picked precise adjectives to describe herself.

HOW TO

It’s easy! I drew and scanned a face you can use as a template. (click below to download). Fold the paper on the bottom line, then fold it again so the ears are correctly placed. Now color at your heart’s content!

You can write your name and a few adjectives to describe you, hide them behind the fold. Use pencils, pastels, markers… Add freckles, glasses, stronger eyebrows, eye lashes…

It was also a good hand-writing practice for Gaspard!
Whatever works ;-)
