Mini vs. Full Family Photography Sessions: Finding Your Family's Perfect Fit

What’s the difference between a 90-min family photo session and a 20-min mini session? As a DC family photographer, I get this question a lot!

There is no right or wrong answer: it all depends on what you want to get out of your family session in the stage you’re in! I’m going to break down the pros and cons of both options to help you decide which is best for you and your family.

  • Duration

An in-home family photoshoot allows more time to capture a variety of shots and provides flexibility to incorporate different locations within the home and surroundings. It’s after the first 30 minutes or so that kids and parents get into a flow that feels natural. You get used to my camera, I pick up on your family’s dynamic. This is where I capture genuine moments and explore your family's unique story through my camera. There's no rush. You can relax, be yourselves, and it allows emotions to come and go. We let the real moments unfold naturally.

A mini session generally is more rushed and lasts around 15 to 20 minutes. It’s great if you’re looking for quick and smooth. We focus on capturing a few key poses or moments and I keep things playful. Contrary to popular belief, there is a lot more pressure during a mini than in a full family session. We have a limited time to bring on the smiles and you need to “perform” for the camera. I always try to keep the minis easy and lightweight though. And I am a fast shooter so even on a bad day, I’ll maximize our time together.

  • Setting

Long-form sessions usually take place within the comfort of your home. I feel like it’s an important and subtle element that brings depth to your photos. The images are more personal and intimate because your family is in its familiar surroundings. You might have drawings on your walls, school notes on your fridge, lego sets on your shelves and all these overlooked details tell the story of the stage you’re in.

The 4 seasons are also represented in your final gallery of images and are interesting to add. Picking tomatoes in your summer garden or carving a pumpkin shows what the kids are into right now. And we know it might change quickly.

In contrast, mini sessions take place in predetermined locations around Washington, DC providing a different backdrop and aesthetic.. It can be a park, studio, a rented space… I scout for locations where kids can run free and safe from cars, with nearby parking spaces and yummy treats close by (for after!). Minis are often outdoors therefore you’re more dependent on the weather. Might be too cold for babies or toddlers and we might need to reschedule.

  • Customization

In-home family photoshoots offer more opportunities for customization. On top of photographing the people, I incorporate meaningful elements, decor, games and settings unique to your family's home. It allows for a more personalized touch, reflecting your family's personality and style. Your family’s dynamic changes over the years and that’s why, even if we have yearly photoshoots, no 2 sessions are alike: the kids grow up, interests differ, personalities shift.

Mini sessions focus mainly on the people and they often follow a specific theme or setup determined by the photographer. They are great if you had a full-length session in the past year and/ or need updated family photos (especially with older kids where you don’t need to update family photos as often). Minis take place on specific days with scheduled slots, at a few predetermined outdoor locations. They focus more on capturing the essence of the family or 1-2 members (like for mommy and me mini sessions) in a specific setting or season (cherry blossom mini sessions or Holiday minis). They are fun!

  • Variety of shots

Storytelling family photoshoots provide a wider range of shots and actions. The photographer can capture different angles, candid moments, and interactions among family members, making it a comprehensive representation of their dynamic. As a photographer, I need time to bring on the creative juices. Having moments where you just hang out and slow down allows me to experiment and create artistic shots to bring variety to your gallery.

Mini sessions being shorter, they are a bit more “posed” and prioritize a few key shots, limiting the overall number of images. Mini sessions are short and sweet, perfect for families who just love a quick burst of laughter and curated happy photos!

  • Level of intimacy

In-home family photoshoots offer a higher level of intimacy and personal connection. You don’t have to drag the kids to the car, worry about traffic, parking and impromptu naps in the car seat.

The family is in a familiar environment, which can result in more relaxed and natural interactions. You drink your favorite coffee (or wine) in your favorite mug. Full sessions have the magic touch of capturing those heartwarming, soulful moments that define your family's bond. Your photographer also learns to know you better and produces different images. It’s another level of connection and rapport.

Mini sessions aim to capture genuine moments too but due to the time constraint, they may have a slightly less intimate atmosphere. We focus on your interactions and love. That’s why you need to be “ready to go” when I aim my camera at you. Minis are the perfect time to snuggle, kiss, play tag, spin... Show off your best moves. Bring on the personalities and let them shine!
